While the program makes references to violence or 'out-of-control' behavior,
it is done primarily to address the realities and prevalence of violence (mostly
toward women) in intimate relationships. This audio program is not meant to
substitute for violence reduction education which is as much a socialization
process as a therapeutic and educational process. Although Taming the
Volcano is being used successfully to address a change in thinking about anger,
personal responsibility, and the responses chosen to events in life, violence is
much more complex. Violence is a practiced behavior toward people specific
targets and is rooted in much deeper motivations, habits, and societal norms.
Taming the Volcano may contribute to violence reduction but is not designed to
address all that violence is about.
When violence is occurring, we recommend that people consider additional
resources including but not limited to, group work, individual therapy, and
other professional resources.
Anger Management is not the only issue when one is working through a
domestic violence scenario. The primary focus of the Taming the Volcano Program
is anger management. That is, the interactions that involve outbursts of anger
which are directed toward people in a variety of situation specific
rather than people specific targets.
